FAQ

Here are the answers to some questions I keep getting now and then. They are in random order. This is basically a FAQ page about myself (Paolo ‘paolino’ Gianrossi)

What Linux distro do you prefer?

I currently am quite fond of Ubuntu. However, Debians in general are ok. I used to love Gentoo once upon a time when I had the time to stay up and optimize the heck out of it. I don’t really like RedHats, including CentOS, Fedora or Suse, but it’s a matter of personal taste.

What mobile phone do you have?

I have two Android phones, which I am quite fond of: a Sony Ericcson Xperia X8 which is my personal phone, and a Motorola Milestone 2 I got for my job as team leader for systems at Jobrapido. I like my androids a lot, and anyway more than iPhones hands down. Also, I came to prefer them over Blackberries, but I suppose that’s me. BB’s have greater battery life, but no angry birds.

Favourite Browser?

I am using Firefox 56 for most of my web activity. I used to work with Chrome, but switched lately.

What’s your job?

I work as the Technical Team Leader for the Systems team in Jobrapido. I report directly to the Director of Technology, and am responsible for site reliability, infrastructure, technical support to internal stakeholders and all other system-level technical activities. My job is about 50% management, 30% systems design, 20% software engineering and programming and 10% system administration.

What’s your favourite programming language?

I am very fond of Perl. My love-of-youth remains ANSI-C. Java is ok, albeit quite cumbersome. I had a short relationship with Python, but couldn’t start to get really running, so I am not heavily opinionated in favour or against it. I don’t really get the fuss around Ruby. PHP is ok, but maybe a little bit too much of a toy language (or maybe it’s just me).

I worked in and liked LISP, ML and Haskell. Functional programming is just soooo cool. It has however been years since my last defun.

Would you consider a job offer?

I consider carefully all job offers I receive. I am always looking to improve my working environment and experience. However, I am quite happy in my current position right now.

Would you work for free?

Normally no. But I am open to collaborate in FOSS projects I like or find useful. Just give it a try, I could agree.

Where are you from?

I am from Italy. I was born in Genoa. I currently live in Pavia and work in Milan.

Are you seeing someone?

I married on September the 3rd 2011. Thank you.

What’s your political position?

I consider myself a libertarian. However, it’s not that simple. I have quite a vision of the world, but it would be too long to fit here. I am open to discuss it if you wish (write to me and let’s have a chat about it), and will probably write something about how I feel politically, one day.
